Firehall Arts Centre presents: Vacant Lot
What: Based on the Japanese play “Sarachi”, by contemporary Japanese theatre artist Shogo Ota, a long-married couple visit the vacant lot where their house once stood. They innocently share memories of their life together, of the house, and of their kids. Soon after, they realize how short this life is, and that our existence in the universe is so fragile. Lindsay Clague and Hiromoto Ida embody the married couple, storytelling through movement, dialogue, and at times, stillness. This work balances on the edge between spoken theatre and dance theatre, exploring elements of both, revealing the loneliness of human existence and our longing to connect to each other and to the universe. While the overarching themes are existential, the play is also filled with delightful comedic moments that tickle the soul.

DanceHouse Presents: Daniel Léveillé’s Amour, Acide et Noix (Love, Acid and Nuts)
What: With its reference to the paradoxical/quixotic nature of passion, the title offers an entry point, but that is only the beginning of the journey. Set against a score of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, pop music, and birdsong, Léveillé uses the mechanics of arms, legs, torsos and skulls to plumb the very nature of the human condition. As the dancers move through a series of entanglements, the shock of nudity disappears, helped along by a lick of humour that runs underneath the solos, duets, and ensemble work.
When: October 24 - 25
Where: Vancouver Playhouse 600 Hamilton st, Vancouver

NDN Giver
What: NDN Giver explores the layered meanings within both every day and extraordinary gifts that circulate through the potlatch. Blankets, coppers, canoes, prints, mugs, trade beads and devil’s club strung into necklaces all become carriers of law, memory, and relation to one another. The title NDN Giver reclaims a phrase rooted in colonialism that mocked Indigenous generosity. In reality, the practice of giving upheld in the potlatch reflects the complexity of responsibilities in Indigenous governance and exchange. To give is to strengthen ties, and to receive is to take on the responsibility of carrying them forward.
